Two Engineering Professors received Outsdanding Faculty Awards Congratulations to Prof. David Kozel on receiving Outstanding Teaching Award and to Prof. Harvey Abramowitz on receiving Outstanding Service Award from Purdue University Calumet on August 26, 2009. The comments from the university committees are given at below.. Outstanding Teacher - Dr. David Kozel Professor Kozel was described as professional, kind and respectful. Multiple comments were mentioned of his ability to be a role model and a mentor who leads by example. In the classroom, expectations are high and material is presented in a stimulating, organized manner. Theoretical material is explained in a practical sense explaining the application in industry. This affords the candidate exceptionally high student evaluation scores despite difficult subject matter. He has an open door policy and is always available to students, even on weekends and at home. Many students commented on Professor Kozel’s encouragement and help with projects. One student commented “once we worked all day and night to complete the project, we left the school at 6:00 AM.” This assistance did not stop at graduation. Numerous students and alumni remarked on professor Kozel’s help and encouragement with careers and pursuing doctoral studies. Despite teaching more than twenty courses in his career, professor Kozel has continued to pursue understanding of emerging topics and developed courses and projects furthering knowledge in these areas. He has actively honed teaching and presentation skills to deliver quality learning experiences to students. Professor Kozel’s impact on students can be summed up by one student’s comment, “In universities, the effort made by a professor makes all the difference in helping students reach their full potential. If we would all have professors like this one, I am positive that every student would be eager to learn and achieve the most in their respective stream of study.” Outstanding Service Award - Dr. Harvey Abramowitz Prof. Harvey Abramowitz has always put our students first, devoting himself to attracting students to attend PUC and to study engineering, and to providing the resources and support to help them succeed. Most significantly, he has obtained three NSF grants totaling over $1 million to provide scholarships for underrepresented populations in science, engineering, math, and technology. To date the program has involved 83 students – 39% female, 33% minority, with 61% obtaining a bachelors and/or associates degree. He received nothing from these grants other than extra work and responsibility. Prof. Harvey Abramowitz has been an active member of the local and national professional societies, serving in many capacities. He was recognized as the Iron and Steel Society’s Ferrous Metallurgy Grant Program Professor for 2002-2005, a prestigious international honor that brought $150,000 to support student activities at PUC. Through his leadership he has brought scholarships and aid to PUC students, local chapter meetings to PUC providing recognition of PUC and opportunities for our students to participate (paid for from his grants). In 2008 he organized the first ASM Materials Teachers Camp in northwest Indiana, held at PUC, for precollege teachers to learn more about engineering. A second camp was held in 2009. He has also organized many student trips to local industrial sites. Prof. Harvey Abramowitz has been active in environmental issues at the state level. He is currently a member of the Indiana Recycling Market Development Board, and previously of the Recycling and Energy Development Board. He has a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to characterize municipal solid waste, where he employs PUC students. Freshman seminars are an important tool for improving student success. Prof. Harvey Abramowitz established the freshman seminar for engineering, which became a template for others throughout PUC.
